Divine Protection
Was re-watching the superbly wonderful anime Code geass R2, and I particularly observe with interest these great shields made of light, stopping bullets, lasers, radiation and all. Which set me wondering the feasibility of these shields made up of light.
First of all, light and matter interact very sparingly, and even when they do, its on a sub-atomic level. Hence, any forces arising from such interactions do not really add up to much. Because they are not all in the same direction. Secondly, there are 4 types of forces for a very good reason. These 4 types of forces do not mix with one another. Only if the object in question are tagged with more than one type of quantity like 'mass' or 'charge' do they come under more than one type of force interaction. Thirdly, gravitational forces are too weak to manipulate any common human daily items. Gravitational forces only become significant on a planetary level. Fourth, most items on the daily level are electrically neutral, which makes it difficult to try manipulate them using EM forces.
Yet despite all that, it may yet still be possible, albeit remotely, that we can get light and matter to interact agreeably. Since most items are electrically neutral, then we will just have to try and induce a charge on them. I have a mad idea, to discharge large quantities of high velocity ions into the air in front of me. Incoming objects, bullets or water droplets for instance, would become electrically charged. Then by means of a magnetic field, deflect these incoming charged objects. The means to produce these high velocity ions is currently tricky. One way is to produce electrons through thermionic emission, accelerate these by electric fields, have them smash into low pressure gas, which would rip apart the gas molecules producing ions, accelerate these ions with electric fields again and finally direct them at whatever you want to point it at. Another way might be to use plasmas to create ions. Plasmas created in an atmosphere of hydrogen would provide plenty of protons and electrons, good for molecular smashing.
Extending the idea, using powerful lasers to generate large clouds of ions, a well known problematic phenomenon called 'blooming effect'. Powerful laser beams that pass through air often ionise the air, dissipating the laser beam. Perhaps this can be utilised to form an electrical barrier?
It remains to calculate the actual feasibility, like how much ion bombardment do you need to induce a significant electrical charge on an object, how strong should the magnetic field be to successfully deflect away incoming objects, how much energy do you need to produce all these. Lastly, I have some concern for the likelihood of strong electrical and magnetic fields required. If these fields are in so close proximity to us, it may cause our bodily functions to be aversely affected? But of cause, with the Faraday cage effect, this would be averted, eg. being in a armored vehicle.
