Facets and faces
I wonder how come some people appreciate works of art, while others just do not see what exactly is so good about that work of art. In my own humble opinion, appreciation is something that can be cultured out. The way you see things.. sometimes we need a different lens to view the world through. Through this lens you might be able to see something new about a particular object.. or maybe a hidden order, symmetry. The lens that I am talking about, is your views, your culture, knowledge learnt. They affect how you think, and therefore your perception of things.
If you have never tried to seen art anymore than just a painting, than you are just now using that admirable brain of yours to think. The painting there on the wall, or the sculpture standing there, is just oils on a canvas, or carved alabaster. Why not think about what it means to you, or maybe how do you think the guy could have done this? Your interetation is yours alone, there is nothing correct nor wrong about it. It simply represents your the type of lens that you have used to view the world through.
But the use of such a lens inevitably colors your vision with false colors, for you come equipped with biases of your own. Everybody uses a different lens, and thats how misunderstandings arise. We intepret the same things differently from each other, so of course we are bound to disagree on matters somewhere. Bearing in this mind, the use of different lens on the same ojects gives rise to different perceptions of the object. Same object yet different facets to it. We're getting somewhere aren't we? The of only one lens is not enough. Through the use of many lens, we not only understand more, see greater variety, we also remind ourselves not to be biased through a particular lens.
That is the answer to superficiality. No one, I believe can be truly superficial. Nor do they have to restrict themselves into thinking they can only think 'superficially'. An objects has naturally many facets. A person naturally has also many sides to his/her personality, character and life. We cannot be any more superficial than we choose to be.
